The Real Face of Disability: What Most People Don’t See Coming

The Real Face of Disability: What Most People Don’t See Coming

April 01, 2026

When most people think about disability, they picture a dramatic accident, a cast, or someone in a wheelchair. But after nearly fifteen years in this field, I can tell you that’s not the reality for most people who lose their ability to earn an income. In most cases, disability stems from an illness, often something related to the muscles, joints, or nervous system, rather than an accident. These are conditions you don’t see coming, and they rarely look like the images used in traditional disability marketing.

A lot of people assume they’ll still be able to work from a hospital bed or push through whatever they’re dealing with. They don’t realize how quickly an illness can take away their ability to do their job. That unawareness is often what leads to financial strain. My job is to bring that awareness forward before someone finds themselves in a situation they never expected.

I’ve learned that the best way to understand someone’s needs is by asking questions. Real questions. Where do you see yourself in ten, twenty, or fifty years? What dreams do you have for your family? What goals are you working toward personally, professionally, or financially? Do you know anyone who hasn’t been able to work because of a disability? These conversations open the door to what really matters to people. Most of the time, the answers revolve around vacations, sending kids to college, retiring comfortably, or simply having the freedom to live life on their terms.

Once we talk about dreams, we talk about the threats that could get in the way. There are four big ones: losing your job, getting sick or hurt, passing away, and eventually retiring and losing earned income. My role is to help people understand these risks and design a plan that protects the income that makes everything else possible.

A disability insurance policy isn’t just about stability. It’s a strategy. It’s a way to protect the life someone is building, not just the paycheck they earn. When I work with clients, we build a policy around their goals, their career path, and the future they’re working toward. And if the day ever comes when a claim needs to be filed, Guardian is the carrier I trust most. Their policies are built to do exactly what we designed them to do, and they stand by the definitions and protections we put in place.

I work with a lot of new professionals, and they’re some of the best candidates for disability insurance. Premiums are low, underwriting is easier, and the coverage can follow them throughout their entire career. Many rely on their employer’s group long-term disability plan, thinking it’s enough, but those plans often have gaps. They may not be portable; they may not cover bonuses or incentives, and they can change at any time. Guardian’s individual policies fill those gaps and evolve with someone as their career grows. I often encourage new professionals to consider term life insurance for the same reason. Insurability matters, and these policies are both meaningful and affordable.

I didn’t start as a specialist. I began as a generalist, learning the full landscape of financial protection. But over time, I realized my mind works best when I can go deep. Disability insurance is complex, financially, medically, and occupationally, and clients deserve someone who understands every layer. In my specialist role, I’ve developed experience in underwriting, policy design, and the nuances that help advisors and clients navigate the process with confidence.

At the end of the day, my goal is simple: to be a resource. To help people protect the income that supports their dreams. To mentor advisors. To build relationships grounded in trust and knowledge. And to make sure no one is caught off guard by the realities of disability that most people never see coming.
